Hear from instructor and successful real estate media business owner, Dominic Wilkerson
I started getting into photography when I was in the military to document my time there.
After a medical discharge due to breaking my leg twice, I needed to figure out a new career path.
In 2016, I was in a really difficult place. I was in college for photojournalism and I wasn’t making much money at my new job.
I was 3 days away from getting evicted.
My car was repossessed. The government had shut down, so I wasn’t getting my VA or college benefits. I had no money coming in. Everything was adding up to a horrible situation.
I ended up landing a gig covering car shows for $120/ event, but it was 8 hours of work and then another 4 hours of editing. If you do the math, I was only making $10/hour. I knew something had to change.
I knew that I should get into real estate media, but people in the field kept telling me that it would be boring and that it was difficult.
(Looking back now, I think they were just trying to gate-keep.)
I was bored and scrolling through Facebook one day when I saw an ad from a company that was looking to hire a real estate photographer. I decided to apply and after MONTHS, I finally got the job.
The main photographer at the company gave me about 10-15 of their clients so I could get started. I was finally working in real estate, but working for a company didn’t really seem worth it. I had to give them 30% of what I made, pay taxes, do my own scheduling, etc.
On top of all of that, I didn’t like the billing software that they used, so I ended up just working with a different software for that. I also didn’t like the editor that they used, so I had to hire someone else. All the company was really doing for me was finding clients, which dried up the first year.
So, I started to look for my own clients on Instagram, and I started getting really good at figuring out how to use the platform to find prospective customers.
At that point, I wanted to figure out if it would even be possible for me to start my own business since I had signed a non-compete with my current company. So I contacted a lawyer who basically told me that as long as I wasn’t making $250K+/year, the non-compete wouldn’t be a problem. (At the time, I couldn’t have imagined making that much with my real estate media business, but now I’m making waaaay more than that.)
Fast forward to today.I’ve used my real estate media skills and my Instagram techniques to build my very own successful business. I’ve got a team of employees and I’m hoping to hire more people next year. Right now, my business is on track to make about $400K this year.
Who could’ve thought that I could go from nearly being homeless to making hundreds of thousands of dollars in a matter of years?
Now, I've partnered with Drone Launch Academy to teach you the skills and techniques you need to start your own real estate media business. I'll give you my exact settings, pricing advice, and even show you how to market your business so you can get clients lined up right away!
I hope to see you soon,
- Dominic Wilkerson
